WHAT TO DO's

First is to make sure electricity is shut off or that the water is not charged, Breakers will trip a majority of the time if water has reached them, better to be safe.  Next step is to locate the water shutoff valve to turn the water off to keep additional water from pouring into the space.  If water is coming through a foundation or window/opening, you will need to divert the water to another area.  Once the water is controlled you can begin the drydown and cleanup of the incurred damages.

First thing is to stop any active water leak and keep water from spreading if possible.  Locate the main water supply and shut the water off.  Next you will want to determine what could be a possible cause for the leak, Toilet, Shower, Vanity sink, Water supply lines, Attic Furnace…..Once the water has been stopped the Mitigation can begin.

If you have musty smell it can be a fungal growth that is beginning to grow, Check for areas that are damp and often out of sight, Under sinks, Cabinets, Around bathrooms and laundry rooms.  If there is no visible growth anywhere then turn on a fan or vent and create some air movement within the area.  If there is visible fungal growth, call a professional for a inspection.

If your roof is leaking first thing is to move any valuables from the affected area,  inspect the roof to see if there is a way to divert water away from the leaking area.  You can call for emergency services and tarp up.

The amount and type of mold are determining factors in the process for mold remediation.  Most basic process for small amounts of mold or to treat the area with a antifungal spray and follow the directions on the labels.
For more larger areas of mold containments, negative air and PPE may be required for the remediation process.  Call for an inspection.
First make sure everyone clears the affected area of the house until a full inspection of the damage can be completed, Make sure to watch for items that will fall from over head, or may be become dislodged suddenly.

Basic items for all homeowners to know.
1. Where is my shutoff valves/switches, Water, Power/Electrical, Gas.
2. Water shutoff valves are located under sinks, toilet supply lines, water supply lines, refrigerator supply lines and the main water supply will be located in the basement, most likely in the mechanical room
3. Electrical Breaker Box can be located in garages and/or mechanical room.
4.Gas valve will be located at the meter on the outside of the house.

First and for most is to have a plan with the people in your house hold before any event.  Next is to take care of yourself, then make sure to help others move to a safe location, once you have left the building do not re enter.  If given time while moving to a safe area, shut doors, window, turn of lights/fans, this will help to contain the smoke and fire to a more confined area.  Having working smoke detectors is key having enough time to safely move out.  Batteries should be changed every time a clock get new batteries

Smoke damage can be very destructive and hard to remove as it can move through the entire area.  It will also penetrate into soft materials such as carpet, blankets, furniture…

Recognizing Possible water damage

Raised seams in flooring

An ice dam acquires when there is a Freeze thaw cycle over a period of time.  water build up will freeze creating a mini lake that will freeze again building bigger each cycle  The water will evenly begin to lift shingles letting water run back up the slope of the roof until it starts to penetrate the roof itself.
